I was standing on the tee of the final hole of a two-man gross best ball tournament needing a birdie to get into a playoff and my playing partner had just snap hooked it into a gully of trees to never be found again.
I was nervous. My partner was upset he had just snapped it off the planet, and the first thing I thought to myself was, “oh no don’t give up, you can hit another one and jar your approach shot for a birdie!!!”.
It was a reachable par five with water and sand in front and out of bounds long. A wide but shallow green made it tough for longer shots to hold and the pin was in the front right.
I tried to lift his spirits so he didn’t just mail it in but it was a tough moment. I calmly went, “that’s alright, I got you!”
Golf is normally an individual sport and when playing alone you can still face immense pressure and experience nerves.
When you have a teammate who’s out of the hole and you have no other option but to make a birdie, the pressure is palpable.
It becomes hard to swallow, and once you get over that, you still have to get yourself together and find a way to execute a golf shot, even with your hands shaking so bad you can’t get the ball on the tee…
It is in these situations that many golfers simply crumble and fold, unable to execute the shots they need under the pressure and in the moment.
